As a creator, producer and director of TV content, Jim Nicholl has made a career of
developing local Canadian talent in his work. His TV experience reflects both the
production and management side of broadcast television. Based on this innovative
approach to local television, he is now acts as a consultant on CRTC licence applications,
and provides design, production, and director services for TV content broadcast or webcast.

MVBC - Vancouver, BC 2001
Broadcast Consultant
Jim Nicholl wrote the core TV application document that won the ethnic licence for MVBC awarded for Vancouver with Decision CRTC 2002-39 on February 14, 2002. He was also responsible for writing, producing and directing the licence-winning video.

As a Victoria/Vancouver broadcast consultant, Jim Nicholl helped design and direct the Craig local "A-Channel on the Island" service for Victoria and Vancouver Island presented to the CRTC in 2000.

BCTV - Victoria, BC 1988 - 1997

As a BCTV Vice-President, Jim Nicholl managed the operation of CHEK-TV on Vancouver Island including the station image, community relations, CRTC accountability and meeting of bottom-line expectations of the shareholders.

In 1996, CHEK-TV introduced digital, disc-based technology that made it the first station in Canada to provide over-the-air broadcasts of its TV content from server-based computer hard drives.

In 1994, CHEK-TV originated 103 hours of live coverage of the XV Commonwealth Games from Victoria for TV New Zealand's "One World of Sport" broadcasts to nations of the Pacific Rim.

As a daily (Monday - Friday) half-hour local program, "CHEK Around" used roving cameras to provide TV content for viewers that showed what was new and interesting in the Victoria/Vancouver Island market.
CHEK-TV locally produced 65 original episodes of the "Home Check" series of renovation programs and these were sold across Canada in syndication and as a series of home improvement videos.

General Manager (1987 - 1997)

CHEK-TV locally produced award-winning TV content in the form of news, syndicated programming, commercials and corporate video. As the station General Manager, Jim Nicholl was creator and executive producer on these projects, providing in-house programming for
WIC Television.

"Time Exposures" put Victoria people and locations in a dramatic series that was locally-made and starred a cast of Victoria-area actors, writers, and crew in a 26 half-hours that was sold across Canada.

The "BC Music Project" with Vancouver Island's own Valdy, showcased exciting new BC performers in a 13 half-hour rock video series that won the CAB Gold Ribbon Award for Canadian Talent Development.


Production Manager (1979 - 1987)

As Production Manager, Jim Nicholl established a higher-end quality of local TV content that was produced in-house and sold in syndication to TV stations across Canada and to cable systems in the United States.


"Body Moves" was a TV exercise series, created and produced for local broadcast and distributed in Canada, New York and Saudi Arabia for a ten year period, generating syndicated sales of over $1.3 Million.
"High Band" was an award-winning, 13-episode series of original late night comedy, written and produced at CHEK-TV for local broadcast and sold in syndication to TV stations across Western Canada.
"Foufouli" was a 13-episode children's fantasy series produced at CHEK-TV for local broadcast using in-house talent and resources, and sold in syndication to independent TV stations across Canada.
As Production Manager, Jim Nicholl also worked on the design and look of the CHEK-TV local news package that achieved an unprecedented 54 share of Victoria CMA (Central Market Area).

Commercial Production Manager (1974 - 1979)
Among the achievements of the CHEK-TV Commercial Production Department was a 1,750% growth in local retail sales over six years and two "Top 10" TvB awards for best TV commercials in Canada.
